The Northshore Weekend

The Textile Galleries at The Art Institute of Chicago re-opened in June and this article is about Ethel Stein, the amazing 96 year old working artist whose work is featured in the exhibition. The Textile Society, which I preside over, sponsored a party at the museum to celebrate the occasion. Beautiful lady; beautiful artwork! (Page 31)

The Northshore Weekend

This newspaper-like magazine is circulated weekly to everyone in the suburbs north of Chicago (local parlance -- the Northshore) and, I have to admit, it was fun to be a
cover girl!

Needlepoint Now

VCF, Inc is developing quite a good relationship with this terrific needlepoint magazine. The editor, Elizabeth Bozievich, joined me on the trip to Ireland and wrote quite a good article on what she learned on the trip. And she will join me in Portugal which I suspect will inspire an article on Arraiolos, the unique needlepoint technique done in this country for centuries.

A few years ago The Textile Society at Art Institute of Chicago started hosting needlepoint workshops at the museum. I shared my experience in planning the events and Elizabeth asked me to write an article about the process so her readers would have the information to plan similar programs where they live. I encourage you to plan an event in a museum of your choice – they are really fun, and can bring the institution of your choice a nice cash contribution!

Needleprint

I was introduced to Jacqueline Holdsworth's blog by an ANG judge. My first impression was good but as I checked back, I began to realize that this is one fantastic reference for those of us who love the needle arts.  A little history, a little learning and, most definitely, a true respect for the needle arts. My trip to Portugal to learn the art of Arraiolos was enthusiastically described on October 12, 2011. After reading her description, I want to go! Thank you, Jacqueline!

Gone Stitching

A terrific connection I made at TNNA winter tradeshow was to Rene Seidman and her store, Gone Stitching. Rene does a weekly needlepoint radio show (!) and was nice enough to interview me. This link will take you to the interview (be patient, the interview with me comes after Rene shares some tradeshow discoveries with her listeners).

Needlepoint for Fun

I ran into Brenda and Cheryl again this year at the winter TNNA tradeshow. They are very nice gals with a terrific website that offers a great selection of canvases, some that come as a kit (a particularly positive option for those of you don't have a needlepoint store nearby). And their newsletter inspires and informs – I recommend signing up. I have to remember to thank my sister for this nice introduction!

Country Bumpkin

The on-line presence of the venerable needlework magazine, Inspirations, mentioned Victoria C. Frank, Inc. in their "8 - 13 January, 2011" edition. This link will take you to the edition in which I am mentioned and might act as an introduction to stitching news on the other side of the world (the Aussies' English heritage is very present in their devotion to extraordinary hand work!).

Quintessential New Trier

QNT (as it is known to the locals) wrote a wonderful article about me and my new business in their January/February 2011 issue. You might be interested in the article that focuses on how I transformed myself from a successful meeting and event planner to a specialty tour operator (and includes some terrific snaps of my 60th birthday trip to the Dordogne – with the poodles!).

Items of Interest

The Silk Mill

A website marketing glorious silk threads. The British lady who started this company attended my tour to Portugal in 2014 and wowed all of us with a gift of a special packet of colors she chose to celebrate the culture of the country we were visiting. She offers flat rate shipping to US and you can pay with PayPal. I know you will be impressed with the depth of color she offers – and the quality of the product. You won't have to lift a finger...
